چکیده

The “Holy Grail” in molecular imaging of cardiovascular disease is sensitive, specific, economic, and radiationfree detection of atheromata prone to produce thrombotic complications.1,2 In this issue of Circulation Research, Broisat et al3 describe another step on the path toward noninvasive molecular imaging of inflammation in atherosclerotic plaque. Although still unproven, the early detection of trouble looming ahead could trigger steps for intervention, possibly involving the aggressive modulation of risk factors. Imaging might even help to define individual risk and to guide appropriate local therapy.4

Molecular Magnetic Resonance Imaging for the Detection of Vulnerable Plaques: Is It Possible?: Retracted.

Recent advances in molecular resonance imaging of atherosclerosis enable to visualize atherosclerotic plaques in vivo using molecular targeted contrast agents. This offers opportunities to study atherosclerosis development and plaque vulnerability noninvasively. In this review, we discuss MRI contrast agents targeted toward atherosclerotic plaques and illustrate how these new imaging platforms ...

MRI detection of endothelial cell inflammation using targeted superparamagnetic particles of iron oxide (SPIO)

BACKGROUND There is currently no clinical imaging technique available to assess the degree of inflammation associated with atherosclerotic plaques. This study aims to develop targeted superparamagnetic particles of iron oxide (SPIO) as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probe for detecting inflamed endothelial cells. METHODS The in vitro study consists of the characterisation and detection of...

LOX-1 protein, A Biomarker in the Prognosis of Atherosclerosis

LOX-1 is a class E scavenger receptor that mediates the uptake of oxLDL by vascular cells. LOX-1 is involved in endothelial dysfunctions, monocyte adhesion, the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of smooth muscle cells, foam cell formation, platelet activation, as well as plaque instability; all of these events are critical in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. These LOX-1-dependent bio...

Leukocyte trafficking-associated vascular adhesion protein 1 is expressed and functionally active in atherosclerotic plaques

Given the important role of inflammation and the potential association of the leukocyte trafficking-associated adhesion molecule vascular adhesion protein 1 (VAP-1) with atherosclerosis, this study examined whether functional VAP-1 is expressed in atherosclerotic lesions and, if so, whether it could be targeted by positron emission tomography (PET). First, immunohistochemistry revealed that VAP...

Molecular imaging of inflammation and platelet adhesion in advanced atherosclerosis effects of antioxidant therapy with NADPH oxidase inhibition.

BACKGROUND In atherosclerosis, local generation of reactive oxygen species amplifies the inflammatory response and contributes to plaque vulnerability. We used molecular imaging to test whether inhibition of NADPH oxidase with apocynin would reduce endothelial inflammatory activation and endothelial-platelet interactions, thereby interrupting progression to high-risk plaque phenotype. METHODS...
